Course Description: 

In this class, readers will build fluency and a love of reading through Reader’s Theater.  The reader's theater strategy blends students' desire to perform with their need for oral reading practice. Reader's Theater offers an entertaining and engaging means of improving fluency and enhancing comprehension. We will work cooperatively in groups to practice scripts, make props and prepare for performance.  Student’s must be able to read at grade level in order to be placed in this class.

Course Description:

This grammar course will provide an introduction into the basics of English grammar. Using the Fix It! Grammar curriculum, we will use direct instruction with practice, hands-on activities, and cooperative games to learn the basic building blocks of grammar. These include the beginning parts of speech, punctuation, and sentence structure. Students should be reading at grade level to take this class.

Course Description:

In this Reading Intervention class, we will combine phonics and decoding strategies to strengthen students’ abilities to read grade-level text.  We will focus our instruction on specific phonemic awareness using Explode the Code curriculum, while practicing sight words and other phonics lessons through group activities and games.  
 

What is phonics? Phonics involves matching the sound of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters.  The more easily children can hear, identify and manipulate sounds, the easier it will be for them to decode words when they are beginning to read. If your child is still slowly decoding, or sounding out, each letter of a word or missing words they “should know” then this might be the class for them. Please reach out with any questions or concerns!

Course Description:

Reading Comprehension encompasses seven core strategies to ensure readers are engaged and understanding the meaning of text at a deep level. In this class, we will immerse readers in these seven strategies: monitoring comprehension, metacognition, graphic and semantic organizers, answering questions, generating questions, recognizing story structure, and summarizing.  

We will use Benchmark Education curriculum to give specific instruction on each reading strategy, practice in class through guided groups, small group actives, games and independent practice, and offer at-home practice opportunities through weekly homework. This class is designed for readers that are reading on or above grade level. Please feel free to email us if you need guidance deciding if this course is right for your reader.
